BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) — A Texas woman has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for falsifying Medicare and Medicaid claims for wheelchairs.

Lula Thurman of Humble received the 46-month sentence Wednesday as a result of pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud.

The 61-year-old Thurman filed claims for wheelchairs supposedly damaged by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita that the government says didn’t exist.

The scheme netted nearly $484,000, and Thurman was ordered to pay restitution in that amount.

She entered the plea last October after being indicted five months earlier.
