The Astros turned the page and opened a new chapter in their 50-year history today. With a new owner, a new general manager and a new philosophy, pitchers and catchers began their new workouts on a crisp clear day in Kissimmee, Florida.
35 pitchers and catchers took part in the first day of formal workouts. Several other position players worked out on their own in the batting cages. The rest of the team reports on February 26.
New owner Jim Crane arrived shortly after the workouts began, watching over the team he finally bought from Drayton McLane in November for $610 million. Also eagerly watching from the sidelines were new Team President George Postolos and new General Manager Jeff Luhnow.
Competition is the name of the game this spring. Several jobs are up for grabs, including third base, centerfield and right field. Pitchers are vying for two spots in the starting rotation, plus the closer’s role and several bullpen jobs.
The catcher’s job is a question mark as well. Jason Castro is coming off knee and foot surgery but says he’s his rehab has gone well. Castro took part in a limited workout the first day and said he’s not feeling any pain in either area.
