HOUSTON (CBS-Houston) – The rain delayed the start of the college baseball season in the City of Houston on Friday. However, the Houston Cougars and Southern Mississippi will not have any excuses on Saturday night as the Cougars will host the C-USA leading Golden Eagles at Hofheinz Pavilion. Tipoff gets underway at 7:00.
The Cougars are struggling to get a win and sit at 11-13 overall, 3-8 in the conference while USM is tied with Memphis for the best record in conference play at 9-2. They are 22-4 overall which is the best record among their peers.
Houston is coming off of a 72-48 loss at Tulsa on last Saturday while Southern Miss defeated that same Tulsa team Wednesday night in overtime at Reed Green Coliseum, 77-69.
Head Coach James Dickey and his Cougars have lost 6 of their last 8, the wins coming against East Carolina and UTEP. Golden Eagles Head Coach Larry Eustachy and USM have won 7 of 8, the lone loss at the hands of UAB with whom they’ve split the season a game apiece.
COUGARS MUST FIND DEFENSE
If the Cougars are going to have a chance of slowing the Golden Eagles, they’re going to have to find ways to focus better and defend.
The Cougars allow an average of 73.2 points per game which is more than they score on average. While the Golden Eagles sit right behind number 2 Houston in C-USA for points scored per game at 72.3 versus Houston’s 72.5, the Golden Eagles are the type defensive team the Houston Cougars have tried to be all season. USM only allows 63.3 ppg.
