HOUSTON (CBS Houston) — Penn State’s longest season in memory ended on a low note when the Nittany Lions dropped the Ticket City Bowl 30-14 to the Houston Cougars and were targeted from above by Pedobear, an Internet meme used to mock pedophiles.

The bear is suggestive of a cute lure for young victims with a sinister, dark side when unmasked. It carried a placard reading, “Keep quiet and don’t tell anyone” with the Nittany Lion icon and was even featured on the stadium’s large screens.

Texas Longhorns message board appears to have taken credit, saying, “Let’s let pedobear provoke people into considering that for which we should be ashamed.”

The post criticized Penn State’s administration for its handling of the Jerry Sandusky scandal and university students for initially defending longtime head coach Joe Paterno, who’s prior knowledge of the scandal is hotly debated.

Sandusky has been charged with raping at least 10 boys.
