LEAGUE CITY, Texas (AP) Police seek clues to the identity of a man who, posing as a construction worker, gained entry to a suburban Houston home and shot the homeowner when told to leave.

The incident happened Saturday morning in a new neighborhood in League City, 25 miles southeast of Houston, where homes were still under construction.

Police say the thief came to the homeowner’s door and said he needed to check on the water pressure. The homeowner became suspicious, however, and told the man to leave.

Police Lt. Bruce Whitten says the thief pulled a handgun, which the homeowner tried to wrestle from his grasp. The gun fired, wounding the homeowner in the leg. The thief fled in a waiting car.

Whitten urged residents to check credentials of workers who show up unexpectedly.
