HOUSTON (CBS Houston) – Houston police say a woman beat her 8-year-old daughter and sent her to the hospital after the child threw away an empty mayonnaise jar.
Paloma Clarissa Martinez, 25, was arrested and charged Tuesday for an Aug. 6 incident in which she is accused of abusing both her daughter and son. The Houston Chronicle reports that after Martinez’s 8-year-old daughter disposed of an empty jar of mayonnaise, the mother used a shoe and a belt to strike her more than 10 times. When her son attempted to intervene, she would also strike him, according to the criminal complaint.
A few days after the incident, the girl told her grandmother and aunt of the beating. Doctors examined the girl’s body and discovered several bruises.
“Complainant’s injuries are consistent with forceful contact with a belt,” the criminal complaint stated. “Complainant has clearly been abused.”
According to the complaint, Martinez told Houston police that she fell on hard times and grew frustrated, admitting that the beating she issued her daughter was excessive.
As of Wednesday, Martinez remained in Harris County Jail. Her bond is set at $5,000.
