The initial Bowl Championship Series standings were released on Sunday evening and the University of Houston debuted at #19 in the first release of the polls. The Cougars are 6-0 so far in 2011 and one of just 10 remaining undefeated programs in college football.
“It’s a good thing when you see your program represented in the B.C.S. standings and it certainly helps with visibility for our university, but as a football team, it doesn’t change our approach,” Head Coach Kevin Sumlin said. Again, it just means we have played well to be one of ten remaining unbeaten programs, and it means we have a lot of opportunity ahead if we continue to prepare and play at a top level.”
Houston moved up in the national rankings this weekend, despite not having a contest. The Cougars are now ranked #20 in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll and jumped from #25 to #21 in the Associated Press rankings.
Sumlin’s squad returns to action in the 2011 Homecoming contest vs. Marshall on Saturday afternoon at Robertson Stadium. The Thundering Herd currently lead Conference USA’s East Division, while the Cougars (6-0, 2-0 in C-USA play) pace the league’s West Division.
Tickets for Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. kickoff are on sale now through the Houston Athletics Ticket Office. Fans can order by calling 713-GO-COOGS or by ordering online at UHCougars.com. In addition, the team will wear throwback uniforms on Saturday commemorating the 1960s and 1970s teams coached by hall of famer, Bill Yeoman. Fans are encouraged to stick around after the game to enjoy a postgame fireworks show and those throwback jerseys will be up for auction starting Monday (Oct. 17) at UHCougars.com.
