This game might have come too soon for the Houston Cougars. But, you get the sense from Head Coach Kevin Sumlin that it wouldn’t really matter when they play Mike Price and the UTEP Miners on Thursday night. It seems like any time would be a good time. Two seasons ago, the Cougars were undefeated and ranked number 12 in the nation after defeating Northwestern State and Big XII opponents Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

Former QB Trevor Vittatoe and the UTEP Miners would be the first conference game of the season for the Cougars. A win over that team, and the Cougars would have started a legitimate 9-0 after wins over conference opponents, UTEP, Tulane, Southern Miss, Tulsa, and SMU. But that obviously didn’t happen. The Cougars would lose 58-41 to UTEP.

When asked at his weekly press conference if he thought about getting revenge after the loss, Sumlin thought about it for a minute and humorously replied, “ah…a little bit”.

But, one would have to think since he’s in the same situation today as he was in 2009, it would be nice to board the bus leaving Sun Bowl Stadium victorious.
