College Football Week 4 Picks
Last week: 1-4
Not a good week, with my only win coming in the wee hours of last Saturday night, as Oklahoma State covered against Tulsa.
San Diego State +10 at Michigan – This is my favorite line of the weekend, with an interesting storyline. New Wolverines HC Brady Hoke is going up against his old school only a month into his tenure in Ann Arbor. Simply put, I think this line is just too high. SDSU is a legitimately good team – the Aztecs are 3-0, with a very good QB in Ryan Lindley.
For Michigan, Denard Robinson has struggled being an efficient passer this season, and the defense is very suspect. I think there’s a chance SDSU wins straight up, and they will cover 10 points.
Boise State -28.5 vs Tulsa – Another play against the Golden Hurricanes, who were hammered by Oklahoma State last week. Boise State has looked very good offensively this season, scoring at least 35 points in both of their games. I think they score at least 35-45 here, and throttle a very shaky Tulsa squad.
Vanderbilt +15 at South Carolina – I expect the Gamecocks to win this game, but much closer than the 15 point line. USC had to eek out a win against Navy, and usually make enough mistakes (especially at QB) to keep other teams in games. I like new Commodores head coach James Franklin; his team is 3-0, with a big win over Ole Miss last Saturday. Vandy should be able to keep this one within a couple of touchdowns.
Florida State +2.5 at Clemson – FSU QB EJ Manuel is questionable for this game, so that’s the big caveat going in. One thing you know about college football is this: NEVER trust Clemson after a big win. That has been a jeckyl and hyde program for about 10-15 years, and they rarely deal well with success.
The Tigers have terrific weapons offensively in QB Tahj Boyd and freshman WR Sammy Watkins, but they like to throw in mind-boggling performances every once in a while. Despite losing last week to Oklahoma, the Seminoles have an excellent defense that could stimy Clemson for 60 minutes. I expect FSU to bounce back and grab a big win in Death Valley.
