Yao Ming, who just retired last month, could be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as soon as next year. John Doleva, The Hall of Fame’s P\resident and CEO, says Yao would not be subject to the usual 5 year waiting period if he’s elected as a contributor to the game.
A member of the Chinese media has already formally nominated the 7-foot-6 center for election as a contributor to the game, based on Yao’s enormous global impact on the sport, especially in Asia.
Yao’s nomination will be considered by the Hall’s international panel, made up of seven experts on the international game. Six of the seven would have to vote in Yao’s favor for him to to be induced in the 2012 class.
