Sure Rockets GM Daryl Morey has a lot on his plate. The replacement of head coach Rick Adelman most likely gets top priority on his “to-do” list. Then there’s that nasty lockout of the players looming. (Opps, what potential lock-out? We never discussed a potential lock-out, I swear Commissioner!)
One of the main reasons that Rick Adelman won’t be back in Houston for a fifth season is because the Rockets roster still needs adjusting, and Rick’s adjustment cup runneth over while Daryl’s still thirsting for moves that will make the roster title worthy.
Good news on that front – or should I say Center?!! Nene Hilario, the 6’11” 250lb Center from Sao Carlos Brazil has opted out of his contract with the Denver Nuggets and is a free agent. Nene has averaged 12 points, 7 rebounds, and a block per game in his nine years in the Mile High city.
Nene has always run the floor well and is quick on his feet – which should fit the Rockets uptempo style very well. Unfortunately, he doesn’t rebound well – possibly because he’s usually in the ear of the nearest referee. Nene is certainly not the best center in the league, but he’s close to All-Star caliber, and I think he’d make a great addition to the Rockets.
With the lockout coming (pretend you didn’t hear that King Stern), cost will be an issue for a guy that’s opting out of an $11,600,000 contract for the ’11-’12 season. Would five-year $60-million deal be good enough? Would the Rockets be willing to make that kind of financial commitment to Nene?
What do you think Daryl? Wait! Don’t answer that, I don’t want you getting in trouble with Emperor Stern.
