The Mardi Gras tradition has been part of the history of Galveston for more than a century, but officially, 2011 marks the 100th celebration of the festive event.

Mardi Gras! Galveston will take place between Feb. 25 and March 8; the event will include 18 parades, eight of which are new.

Tickets for the event will cost $15 for visitors at the gate, but there is no admission cost for parades along Seawall Boulevard.

Friday, Feb. 25 is opening day for Mardi Gras! Galveston and will include a parade salute to George Mitchell, who revived the event in 1985 after a 44-year period.
