Gabrielle Giffords Learning To Speak Again

A month after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head, she is learning to speak again, the New York Times reported yesterday.

She has been lip-syncing songs including “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and “I Can’t Give You Anything but Love, Baby” and has also been videotaped mouthing the words to “Happy Birthday” as a surprise for her husband.

“It’s not like she’s speaking the way she spoke, but she is vocalizing and making progress every day,” said Pia Carusone, Giffords’ chief of staff.

It was first reported last week that Giffords had spoken for the first time since she was shot at a meet-and-greet event in Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 8.

Despite promising early signs, specialists are still unsure as to what functions have been affected by her injuries, but family members remain hopeful.

“As far as Gabby’s progress, you can quote me as saying, ‘Yippee!’,” said Giffords’ mother Gloria.

The congresswoman is recovering at TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital in the medical center.
