Former First Lady Laura Bush will visit a school in northeast Houston to launch an initiative toward reducing the dropout rates in high schools.

Laura Bush is scheduled to make the announcement this morning at Stovall Middle School in the Aldine Independent School District. She will be joined by experts in education and research to introduce the Middle School Matters initiative focused on dramatically increasing the number of American children who complete middle school at grade level and graduate from high school.

The Alliance for Excellent Education, a policy institute, says one-third of students, almost 1.3 million each year, leave high school without a diploma.

The announcement will take place at Stovall Middle because Aldine ISD superintendent Wanda Bamberg helped develop Middle School Matters.
