The Houston Cougars faced the Rice Owls at Tudor Fieldhouse and fell apart in overtime, losing 79-71 and ending their eight-game winning streak against their in-town Conference-USA rival.
Rice forward Arsalan Kazemi finished the game with his 13th double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds, but Rice guard Connor Frizzelle came off the bench to lead both teams in scoring with 18 points.
Houston guard Zamal Nixon led the Cougars with 15 points, four assists and three rebounds.
The Cougars (11-8, 3-3 in C-USA) led 31-28 at the half but gave up the lead during the final minutes of regulation and were forced into overtime tied 56-56. The Owls (10-10, 2-4) went on a scoring spree in overtime, which included a 3-point shot by Frizzelle.
The Owls win two consecutive games for the first time since they beat LSU on Dec. 29 and TCU on Jan. 2.
