Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords arrived by private jet in this afternoon right here in Houston and was taken by LifeFlight medical helicopter to the Memorial Hermann Hospital intensive care unit before she is transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Medical Center.
Giffords was taken by ambulance Friday morning from University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona to a jet that was flown into Houston after 1 p.m. Friday. The congresswoman had been hospitalized since she was the victim of a mass shooting in early January.
U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee released the following statement Friday:
“Today, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords begins her rehabilitation at Memorial Hermann Hospital and TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she will receive world class treatment and care from the Texas Medical Center and the Houston medical community, one of the finest in the world. I want her and her family to know that the people of Houston, and I will be praying for her speedy recovery while in Texas. I thank the medical professionals that will be caring for Congresswoman Giffords, who is a strong, dedicated and resilient woman. I have no doubt in my mind that her recovery and rehabilitation will be positive and unflagging. I extend to Congresswoman Giffords’ husband, NASA Captain Mark Kelly, and her family, including her mother and father my unconditional support and prayers during Congresswoman Giffords’ stay in Texas.”
A candlelight vigil for Gabrielle Gifford is scheduled for tonight between 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. outside TIRR located at 1333 Moursund St. Click here for directions. Organizers of the vigil have asked anyone who plans to attend to bring their own candles.
In lieu of monetary donations to Giffords, the Giffords family has asked for donations to the Houston Food Bank in Gifford’s name.
